This guide will answer some basic questions about networking, and it's role in Oblivion Reborn.

First, some quick terminology:

  • IP Address: The address of your computer, either on your local network, or on the internet. (It can look like this: 192.168.0.1)
  • Port: The specific channel used for certain kinds of communication.
  • Server: The computer that hosts a program that facilitates communication between all the players.
  • Client: A player/user.
  • TCP/UDP: Two forms of communication. They are not compatible. Oblivion Reborn only uses TCP.
  • realmlist.wth: A file in your Oblivion folder that tells the client the server's IP address and port.

Oblivion Reborn requires three networking components to function properly:

  • A computer running Oblivion, with Oblivion Reborn Installed.
  • A computer running the OblivionRebornServer.exe (doesn't require Oblivion to be installed)
  • A second computer with Oblivion and Oblivion Reborn.
Note: The first two can be running on the same computer.

Note on IP addresses: There are 2 kinds of IP addresses:

  • Local: A local IP address tells the location of a computer on the same network (will not work over the internet)
  • Remote: A remote IP address tells the location of a network on the internet.
Note: Hamachi uses something very similar to an IP address, but it works differently (see Hamachi guide).

Here is a step-by-step process to connect all three components successfully:

  1. Pick a computer to run the server. (This computer can also be a client, just note that it will connect to itself, not a remote computer).
  2. Find the IP of that computer (now referred to as the "Server Machine").
  3. Note: If both computers are connected locally on the same network, you will want the local IP address, otherwise, you will want the remote IP address.
  4. On both clients, edit the realmlist.wth file and replace the default IP address with the server's IP address (see below):

  5. 1
    192.168.0.55 42427

The port ("42427" in the example), should always be that, unless the serversettings.ini file has been altered.
  6. Run the server.
  7. Follow instructions in the Tutorial to connect both players to the server.
  8. Check the Oblivion Console (enable it in the controls menu, then press "~" key) to verify connection status.

The best place to check if something seems wrong is the server log ("log.txt" in the server's folder).

Common Misconceptions:

Do both players run the server? NO. Only One player runs the server, the other player should change the realmlist.wth to the server's IP (see step 3 above).
I can't tell if I'm connected to the server! Yes you can! Open the console! (see step 6 above).
I can't find any internet servers! Try using OR:Express.
